What is a Domain?

A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control within the internet. They are formed by the rules and procedures of the DNS (Domain Name System).

It refers to a business, entity, platform, product, or service provider who uses their company name as their domain name. Some companies use a brand name as their domain that is not their legal name but they wish to use as they are doing business using a specific name. This is also referred to as DBA (Doing Business As).

What is DBA (Doing Business As) or Trade Name?

You can do business with a different name other than the legal name of your company.

For example, if you have the company name, “Example Electronics LLC” and you wish to develop a website to sell your electronic product, you can register a domain as “exampleearphones(.)com” and sell your earphone products on this website. This practice is what’s also known as DBA (Doing Business As).

Most countries require you possess a DBA License before you can sell your products/services using a different brand name.

I often get questioned about how we came up with the name Weebly. We all know that all of the good domain names are already taken, and we had neither the desire nor budget to try and fit our business into a pre-existing word – so we made one up.

What is a Top-Level Domain Name?

First, you need to understand that a domain is the web address of a website that visitors visit using their web browsers. It’s a unique name that uses a specific Top-Level Domain or TLD, for example .com, .net, .org, .co, .xyz, .gov, .info, .biz.

A domain name is your address, your address on the Internet. We all have a physical address; we’re all going to need an address in cyberspace. They’re becoming increasingly important. I believe we’ll get to the point where when you’re born, you’ll be issued a domain name.

IP Address for Domain Names and Why they’re Important

The internet is a huge network of computers and servers that communicate with other computers and devices using a unique IP address such as 88.123.45.2.

A similar IP address is updated for every domain name. As soon as you register a domain and purchase a hosting plan, you are provided with a unique IP address that is pointed to your domain in your domain DNS setting.

How does a Web Browser Connect with a Domain?

When you enter a domain name in your device web browser, it first sends a request to the server where your website is hosted, then the server sends a response back and the website opens on your browser, this entire communication is managed through the unique IP address assigned to a domain.

The domain is a component of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) used to access a website, for example:

URL: https://www.example.com

In the above case, the top-level domain is .com, the second-level domain is example, and the hostname is www.

Note: A domain name is pointed to a unique IP address but can be pointed to multiple IP addresses to manage huge traffic and audiences.

What is Domain Bulk Registration?

Suppose, you have an idea about a brand name and you want to secure all major TLDs for your brand name, for example, .com, .net, .info, .biz, etc. You can register all of them at once.

There are a lot of investors in the domain industry today because domains have become what can best be described as internet real estate. If you can reserve key primary domains, you can sell them at your asking price in the future. Companies and individuals who realized the importance of domains 20 years ago own the most expensive domains in the world today. They might be reluctant to sell it even for millions of dollars because of the massive revenue it generates annually.

In the future, fortune could well favor those who didn’t sell their good domain names too cheaply, or too boldly.
